The police say she’s guilty.
She insists she’s innocent.

She’s your sister.
You loved her.
You trusted her.
But they say she killed your child.

Who do you believe?

Original, devilishly clever and impossible to forget, this is a thriller with a difference. You won’t be able to tear yourself away from the trial that will determine both sisters’ fates.

Review

I was very giddy about receiving this book in the post! I have been so preoccupied reading historical fiction, YA, and Sci-Fi, that I was eager to dive head first into a highly anticipated crime thriller, and especially from an author I have previously been blown away by!

As a law graduate, my expectations were high. I know how trials work, (and how they don’t) and my family are subjected to my countless ‘THAT’S NOT RIGHT’ comments if we are watching a TV programme involving a court room where the writers have got things wrong. To put it bluntly, no detail goes a miss! So, when I read this book with a fine toothcomb, I was so happy that McAllister had got everything right down to a T (I should have expected perfection as she is also a lawyer!), I will never doubt you again Gillian, not that I ever did!!! 😉 I was instantly gripped by this highly sophisticated novel, with a strong narrative and thrilling plot.

Martha is in a position no parent should ever be in- her child, Layla, is dead. If this wasn’t traumatic enough, the person to blame for Layla’s death is Martha’s own sister, Becky. This story is emotionally draining; I was on the edge of my seat as I was rushing to get to the gritty conclusion.

This book is a reminder that things are not always as they seem, details are more significant than first thought, and people will always have their own version of events.

The characters, although very frustrating, were incredibly complex and unstable which made the story gripping. I felt, as a reader, that I was invited to take part as a juror myself, weighing up the evidence and come to a verdict. Let me tell you, I could not make my mind. So many twists and turns had me scratching my head, aware that the truth lurked around the corner.

Recommendation

I would definitely recommend this book who enjoys crime thrillers, courtroom dramas, and mystery novels. This novel tick all the boxes and I believe it is McAllister’s best yet! (Although, I still loved Everything But The Truth!) A lot of time, effort, and passion must have gone into creating this exhilarating story. It goes to show that authors and writers do not have to have studied creative writing, and that their strengths shine through in their work. A lawyer writing a court room drama- what more could you ask for?!
