Hi everyone! I am so excited to be on the official blog tour for Jodi Perry’s new book, Nineteen Letters. Read my full review below!
Nineteen. There’s something about that number; it not only brought us together, bonding us forever, it also played a hand in tearing us apart.
The nineteenth of January 1996. I’ll never forget it. It was the day we met. I was seven and she was six. It was the day she moved in next door, and the day I developed my first crush on a girl.
Exactly nineteen years later, all my dreams came true when she became my wife. She was the love of my life. My soul mate. My everything. The reason I looked forward to waking up every morning.
Then tragedy struck. Nineteen days after we married, she was in an accident that would change our lives forever. When she woke from her coma, she had no memory of me, of us, of the love we shared.
I was crushed. She was my air, and without her I couldn’t breathe.
The sparkle that once glistened her eyes when she looked at me was gone. To her, now, I was a stranger. I had not only lost my wife, I had lost my best friend.
But I refused to let this tragedy be the end of us. That’s when I started to write her letters, stories of our life. Of when we met. About the happier times, and everything we had experienced together.
What we had was far too beautiful to be forgotten.
When I read the blurb of this book, I knew it was going to be something special. I warn you though, to read this book will will need a surplus amount of tissues, emotional support, and at least two weeks to recover. The way Perry writes is so emotive, I couldn’t help but shed tear after tear when reading this beautifully tragic story.
I thought the concept of the novel was very dramatic and moving; my heart ached for Braxton and Jemma, as they both lost each other from that terrible accident. However, I believe it is the characters that make the story something special. There was so much love between Braxton and Jemma, it would be a crime to let that love go. Forget Prince Charming, Braxton is the one you’re routing for; he is so kind, generous, and whole-heartedly determined to not let their love be forgotten.
But just because something is lost doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. I felt privileged watching Braxton and Jemma fall in love all over again. Those nineteen letters that he wrote are so full of devotion, you can’t help but hope for a breakthrough. In addition to Braxton and Jemma, I also enjoyed the sub-characters in the story. Again, there is so much drama and emotion raining down on them, you can’t help but feel a connection almost instantly. I think it’s incredibly important for a reader to feel a deep connection with a character in order to get on their emotional level. It not only shows the skill of the author, but also brings the book into the real world. Perry does this with great attention which comes across strongly in her novel.
I felt incredibly nostalgic when reading Nineteen Letters. I love the descriptions of imagery used which caused a wonderful fuzzy feeling inside. It made me think about when I first met my significant other and all the incredible adventures we have been on. We’re off on our travels soon ourselves soon! I admired the way each memory was precious, as if I was looking at it through a snow globe; perfect and stunning.
There is a moral to the story, and although it is spelled out at the end (DON’T PANIC, NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW!) it is emphasised throughout Perry’s novel. If you love someone, tell them, show them, shout it from the rooftops! Love like you’ve never loved before, as it is the most beautiful thing in the universe. I think that any story with a message as profound as this is one that should be on every bookshelf. This story reminds you that there is no one more important that the ones you love, be that family, friends, or your soul mate, all you need is love…
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the works of Nicholas Sparks and Jodi Picoult. This emotional roller-coaster of a story will stay with you a long time after you read it. My heart was stretched to the max throughout this novel; Perry really has created a beautiful piece of literature which should be treasured by all. I can honestly see this book becoming a movie, and by that, I mean a 10-hour long film including every single detail of the book! To sum up, I would say this is A heart-warming story proving that love really does make the world go round.
