Sorry I have been absent for a week- in addition to university studies and deadlines I am suffering from a rotten cold! On the mend though so you can expect some exciting things happening on my blog!
Today, I am part of the blog tour for Rachel Amphlett’s upcoming novel “Hell to Pay”- ‘A Kay Hunter Detective novel’.
I was so excited to be part of the cover reveal for this book (see post ‘Just for the Hell of it…’ and super duper excited to be part of the blog tour!
What’s it about?
“When a road traffic accident on a dark autumn night uncovers a disturbing conspiracy, Detective Sergeant Kay Hunter’s investigation exposes a ruthless serial killer exploiting vulnerable young women. With her enemies unmasked and her career spiralling out of control, Kay’s determination to seek vengeance for the victims brings her dangerously close to those who want to silence her. Undeterred, she uncovers the real reason behind a plot to destroy her career and sets in motion a terrifying chain of events. Could Kay’s need for revenge be her undoing, or will she survive to see justice served?”
Sounds great right?
Well, haven’t I just got a treat for you?! An interview with Rachel Amphlett herself…
Please introduce the character in terms of name, job, relationship status, kids etc.
Adam Turner is a veterinary surgeon who owns a busy practice in Maidstone, Kent. He’s the partner of Detective Kay Hunter, and you never know what animal he might be bringing home next…
When did you create Adam?
When I was developing the idea for a female-led crime thriller series, I decided early on that I didn’t want her to have a fractured home life – there were already plenty of other books like that around.
As a lot of the crimes Detective Kay Hunter investigates are dark and disturbing, I wanted her home life to provide her with a sense of normality.
The idea of Adam being a vet really appealed to me as soon as it popped into my head. (I blame watching repeats of the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small as a kid.)
Did you write the book to accommodate Adam or Adam to accommodate the book?
Adam was an integral part of the original series idea right from the start. I knew I had to be careful with the pacing of the books in the Detective Kay Hunter series because they’re so intense. Having Adam as a calming influence for Kay when she got home (depending on whatever animal he’s housing at the time!) was really important to me.
What do you like most about him?
I like that Adam is Kay’s equal in intelligence, provides her with a safe home life, AND give me a perfect excuse to provide some light relief for readers during the course of the series.
What do you like least about him?
I honestly can’t think of anything, but you never know what characters might do next when you’re writing a new story, so he might surprise me later on down the track!
Did your early readers/editorial team like him to start with or did you have to change him in any way?
I was lucky in that my early readers all loved the dynamic between Kay and Adam, and it’s been a joy to develop their relationship further as the books progress.
Does he have any similarities with anyone real? Who? What? Why?
Not any one person, but because I’ve always had pets since I was about five years old, I’ve hung around a few vets in my time and I’ve always picked up on the compassion they have for people and animals – the two go hand in hand. It was this persona that I wanted to capture in Adam’s character.
What are your plans for him?
Ooh, that’d be telling – you’re going to have to watch this space 😉
Would you be friends in real life?
Definitely – anyone who likes animals is okay by me!
I would describe this book as a ‘fast-paced, heart-racing hell of a book!’
