Hello again! What a way to kick-off the week with another book review! The author contacted me giving me a free copy of her book in exchange for a free review. Today, it’s a book by Gillian Will, ‘The State of Wyoming, Episode 1- LARAMIE’.
This review is a little different as the book is a little different! This particular book is the 1st in a series… of episodes- yes episodes! The series is set out like a TV series with a new episode to look forward too. The episode itself is short and snappy; a witty political satire comedy with memorable characters and an engaging story line.
Elliot Vance, liaison between the State of Wyoming and Federal government, is your everyday lazy worker who in episode 1, has to fly to Wyoming for the very first time and actually do his job! Problems start to surface and Elliot needs to sort out a political mess that he may not be able to handle! In addition to Elliot are Delaware and Nebraska. I liked how they were called by their State hereby offering an office-humour atmosphere to the story.
Tara, Elliot’s republican nemesis, flies to Wyoming with him and they become the ‘odd-couple’ of political affairs. Her remarks, wit and no-nonsense attitude adds irony to the plot and to the characters themselves.
I have to say, I am not well acquainted with the political world of the United States, however this novel was not hard to understand. It is very down-to-earth with the intention of making you laugh, but still deals with some sensitive themes at times.
Furthermore, you get a really good feel of the characters, but it’s not OTT! Will uses descriptive language to introduce the characters creating a vivid image of them.
The writing style is easy to follow and almost ‘script-like’ but it does not derive focus from the plot. I really enjoyed reading this episode as it is unusual and different to other political books. Furthermore it shows the humorous side to a world where, more often than not, it appears on our TV screens for the wrong reasons. I would say that because of it being short, there is very little room for character development at this time. Additionally, it ended quite abruptly, but as a short series it does leave you wanting more, making you to ‘tune-in’ to the next episode. An overall enjoyable and unusual story! I have to say I am anxious to read the next episode and find out what is next in store for Elliot!
The author is very ahead with the political agenda and has done a brilliant job of representing her research/interests in a comical and satirical way. A quick-paced plot filled with lots of ironic and farcical devices.
I would recommend this book to anyone who engages with the news, politics, is privy to an office atmosphere or is interested in the themes presented in the book. The story’s charm and wit will leave you engaged with the humorous political agenda of Elliot and the State of Wyoming.
